Incroyable!

It's a bit late and redundant of me to comment on the entire array of Spring/Summer 2012 collections that were previewed in the past month, however one particular collection is worth mentioning. Sarah Burton's third collection as creative director for Alexander McQueen took my breath away. The craftsmanship and thought that went into every look was incredible. This collection showcased her true abilities as a designer and further entrenched into one's mind that she is the ideal person to helm the house of McQueen after the designer's untimely and unfortunate death in 2010.

One of the inspirations for Burton when designing this collection was Gaia, a Greek goddess of nature and the sea. While other designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Riccardo Tisci also chose to do an aquatic theme for their spring collections, I felt that Burton was the most successful in transmitting the theme through the clothes while not making it too blatantly "Little Mermaid". Right down to the dress that resembled a coral reef, all outfits were stunning.

I was lucky enough to see Savage Beauty, an exhibit on McQueen's work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this past summer. When viewing McQueen's past designs, one gets the sense that there is underlying darkness and almost wickedness that resonate throughout his work. With this collection, Burton presented outfits that stayed true to McQueen's legacy but reflected a certain lightness and femininity. All in all, it made for a beautiful and unforgettable collection.
