You're In: Sequins and Sparkle

While this is the time of year that the Gods deem most appropriate for sequins, sparkle, glitter, and shimmer, my personal take on the sitch is that they are suitable all year around, and for any occasion (baptisms, job interviews, jury duty, you name it!). However, the Gods are right in saying that one should pair anything sequin'ed or glitter'ed with something more toned down - such as shoes, tops or bottoms with solid, neutral colours - so your look is not totally overwhelming.

Here are some of my favourite looks that feature my favourite embellishments.

You're In: D-on-D

No longer reserved for country bumpkins and clueless dads, denim-on-denim (or D-on-D) is IN for the fashionably inclined. Street style pictures from the recent Spring/Summer 2012 fashion weeks show tout le monde sporting the D-on-D trend. It's a look I wholeheartedly endorse for its ease, comfort, and blank-slateness (that's a word). D-on-D can be achieved in just three easy steps.

How to Rock the Canadian Tuxedo:

1.  Pick a pair of jeans. If you are like me and own 20 pairs of jeans that all look the same, this shouldn't be too hard. I find skinny, dark jeans work best.

2. Find a denim top. While you could simply head on down to your neighbourhood H&M to purchase a denim button-up, a cheaper alternative is to raid your aforementioned clueless dad's closet and steal one of his denim shirts (if he grew up in the 1960's and 70's, it's guaranteed he possesses at least one of these) The more oversized the better. This is the one I managed to snag from father's wardrobe:

3. Accessorize. As I attempted to explain,  one of the great things about D-on-D is that you can wear it with practically any accessory. Belt? Check. Scarf? Check. Cute fedora? Check. The denim is your blank canvas. I recommend pairing D-on-D with brown or black lace up boots and a collar necklace.

That's all there is to it. Insta-denim partay.

As an added bonus, if you are successful in finding dad's oversized denim button-up, you can continue the denim trend into the spring by cutting off the sleeves and belting it up à la Phillip Lim.
